Based on the DC Comics superhero Batman, The Batman is a
2022 American superhero movie. It is a reboot of the Batman film series,
produced by DC Films, 6th & Idaho, and Dylan Clark Productions, and
released by Warner Bros. Matt Reeves, who co-wrote the screenplay with Peter
Craig, directed the movie. Along with Colin Farrell, Zoe Kravitz, Paul Dano,
Jeffrey Wright, John Turturro, Peter Sarsgaard, and Andy Serkis, it features
Robert Pattinson as Bruce Wayne/Batman. The Riddler (Dano), a serial murderer
who preys on Gotham City's wealthy, is being sought after by Batman, who has
been combating crime in the city for two years.
After Ben Affleck was chosen to play Batman in the DC
Extended Universe (DCEU) in 2013, production got under way. Affleck agreed to
act, produce, co-write, and direct The Batman, but shelved the project due to
her misgivings. Reeves took over and changed the plot, cutting out any
references to the DCEU. He drew influence from the films of Alfred Hitchcock
and the New Hollywood era, as well as comics like Year One (1987), The Long
Halloween (1996–97), and Ego in order to explore Batman's detective side more
than in prior films (2000). Pattinson was cast in May 2019, and other roles
were cast in the latter part of that year. The COVID-19 epidemic finished
filming in March after it had started in the UK in January 2020. Later in the
year, it was restarted, and in March 2021, it was finished in Chicago.
The Batman debuted at the Lincoln Center in Manhattan on
March 1, 2022, and was theatrically released throughout the world on March 4,
2022 after the COVID-19 epidemic forced two delays to its initial release date
of June 2021. With roughly $770 million in box office receipts and a $185 to
$200 million budget, the movie was a financial success and ranked sixth in 2022
for overall box office receipts. Critics gave it favorable reviews and praised
the acting, music, photography, Reeves' direction, the action scenes, and the
plot, however some criticized the length of the film. With two planned sequels
and two spin-off TV shows in production for HBO Max, The Batman is meant to
usher in a shared world for the Batman.
Plot
Don Mitchell Jr., the mayor of Gotham City, is killed on Halloween
by the Riddler, a mask-wearing serial murderer. The Gotham City Police
Department and reclusive millionaire Bruce Wayne, who has served as the
vigilante Batman for two years, look into the killing (GCPD). James Gordon, a
lieutenant, finds a note that the Riddler left for Batman. The Riddler murders
Commissioner Pete Savage the following evening and leaves Batman with yet
another note.
Batman and Gordon learn that the Riddler left Mitchell's car
with a thumb drive that included pictures of Mitchell and Annika Kosolov taken
at the Iceberg Lounge, a nightclub run by Oswald "The Penguin"
Cobblepot, the lieutenant of criminal lord Carmine Falcone. Batman discovers
that Selina Kyle, Annika's roommate, is a waiter at the club as the Penguin claims
ignorance. Batman sends Selina back to the Iceberg Lounge in search of
information after Annika vanishes and learns that Savage and District Attorney
Gil Colson were both employed by Falcone.
Colson is kidnapped by The Riddler, who then attaches a
timed collar bomb to his neck and sends him to disrupt Mitchell's funeral. The
Riddler contacts Colson on his phone before Batman arrives and threatens to
blow up the bomb if Colson can't solve three puzzles. Colson declines to
respond to the final question—the identity of the informant who provided the
GCPD with information that resulted in a landmark cocaine arrest that put an
end to mobster Salvatore Maroni's operation—and passes away. Batman and Gordon
follow the informant to a heroin sale after deducing that he could be the
Penguin. They learn that numerous dishonest GCPD officials were involved in
Maroni's enterprise, which was handed to Falcone. When Selina arrives to steal
money and finds Annika's body in a car's trunk, she unintentionally exposes
them. Batman eventually catches the Penguin after a pursuit in a vehicle, but
soon discovers that he is not the informant.
Batman and Gordon trace the Riddler's trail to the remains
of an orphanage supported by Thomas and Martha Wayne, Bruce's slain parents,
and discover that the Riddler harbors resentment for the Waynes. Alfred
Pennyworth, Bruce's butler and caregiver, is sent to the hospital after opening
a mail bomb intended to him. Evidence that Thomas, who was running for mayor
when he was killed, paid Falcone to assassinate a journalist who was penning a
piece on Martha's family's history of mental illness is leaked by The Riddler. Batman

Batman learns that Annika was killed because she discovered
that Falcone was the informant, and Selina admits that Falcone is her father
and that he killed both Annika and her mother. Falcone overpowers her and tries
to murder her despite her best efforts to do so. In time to save her and
capture Falcone, Batman and Gordon arrive, but the Riddler shoots them both
down with a sniper rifle shortly after. The Riddler is revealed to be Edward
Nashton, who is a prisoner at Arkham State Hospital and claims to have drawn
inspiration from the Dark Knight when going after the corrupt. Batman discovers
that Nashton has detonated car bombs around Gotham and developed an online fan
base with the intention of killing mayor-elect Bella Reál.
The explosives flood the city and demolish the seawall enclosing Gotham. The adherents of Nashton make an effort to murder Reál, but Batman and Selina are able to stop them. In the aftermath, Nashton makes friends with another prisoner[a], while Selina decides that Gotham is hopeless and departs. Batman pledges to instill optimism in Gotham while helping with rehabilitation operations.
