Tapirus animals of the world

To date, five species of tapir have been identified worldwide. These are herbivores. The short nostrils are a special feature of these. Pigs have a body similar to their characteristics. There are four species inhabiting South and Central America. One species lives in Southeast Asia

Tapirus bairdii

It is the largest land-dwelling animal in Central America. Height ranges from 5.9 to 8.2 feet . Light brown fur can be seen all over the body. These animals live in the mud on hot days .

Areas: - South and Central American region

Food: - Leaf, bark, fruits

Lifespan: - About 25 years

Weight: - About 275 kg

According to Aiken's Red Data Book, this animal is endangered. This is due to deforestation and poaching.



 

Tapirus indicus

It is so named because it is found in the Asian region .Tapirus indicus is the largest species currently found. The back of the body turns white. All other areas are black. Does not look good but has a good Olfactory.

Areas: - Southeast Asian Region

Food: - Leaves, bark of trees

Lifespan: - About 30 years

Weight: - About 500 kg

According to Red Data Book, this animal is endangered. This is due to deforestation and poaching.



 

Tapirus kabomani

Recently discovered latest species. It is the smallest species of tapirus in the world. The average height is about 90 cm. Body color is slightly darker. Although living alone, there are female and male pairs .

Areas: - Rainforests of South America

Food: - Bark, leaves

Lifespan: - About 20 years

Weight: - About 110 kg

An endangered species. Crocodiles, anacondas and leopards are the main threats



Tapirus  pinchaque

It gets its name from the fact that it lives in the mountains between 2000 and 4000 meters above sea level in South America. There is a furry body due to the cooling in those areas.

Region :- South America

Food :- bark, leaves

Lifespan :- About 20 years

Weight :- About 150 kg

It is the second smallest animal in the species. Does not inhabit tropical rainforests .The lips are white. According to Red Data Book, this animal is endangered. This is due to deforestation and poaching.



 

Tapirus terrestris

Also known as the South American tapirus. The body is covered with brown fur. There is a white mark above the rounded earlobes. Has the ability to run very fast.

Areas: - In the Amazon Basin

Food: - Bark, leaves

Lifespan: - About 22 years

Weight: - About 226 kg

The small animal of this species has white dots or lines on its brown body.



 

 

April 27 is “World Tapirus Day” every year. A date has been set to make the people of the world aware of these animals. Their habitats are being destroyed by human activities. Seed dispersal is a service of these animals.
